Introduction

Benefits of attending

In order to make effective decisions, organisations need quality information relating to the benefits sought, instead of just focusing on the delivery of capability. It is important that benefits information is produced in the context of a cohesive framework, which is flexible enough to align with all other key processes.

This workshop provides an overview of a comprehensive, structured process for realising benefits and considers the  impact of the information produced during each phase of the process on the quality of benefit-led decision making.

Or put simply, would you like to know?

  • What benefits management is all about - across projects, programmes and 'business as usual'.
  • How to do the basics well - setting the foundation to achieve lasting value from all your change activities.
  • What the term 'benefits-led actually means and why it is more than just management jargon.
  • How to identify and define appropriate benefits.
  • How appropriate benefits information supports effective decisions that are aligned to the achievement of benefits.
  • How to start embedding a benefits-led approach so it can become 'the way things are done around here'

If so, this interactive one day training workshop is for you!

Practical exercises on the day centre on:

    • Identifying appropriate initiative based benefits and the related change activities (by constructing a Benefit Dependency Map)
    • Positively influencing stakeholders so they see BRM as central to the success of the initiative, not just as an 'add on'.
    • Identifying immediate actions to improve benefits management within your organisation (by using the sigma BRM Maturity Model).

    Seminar outline

Each session, outlined below, will build on the previous one to ensure that you are able to understand the linkages between each separate element, as the day progresses.

     Why take a Benefits-led approach?

    • What is your motivation for being on the workshop?
    • Understanding what it is that broadens the context and application of benefits work.
    • Allowing you to share experiences with fellow professionals.

    Which tools can help?

    • In many organisations, benefits information is inconsistent in format and in quality, making related decision-making difficult and therefore likely to be avoided or ignored. We will help you to make this more likely to be done well.
    • In addition, in this session an experienced benefits practitioner will give you the essential language and tools which allow for the building of a structured approach to effective Benefits Realisation Management.

     Influencing others?

    • We will show you that experience suggests that influencing others to take a benefit-led approach can be a real challenge and should not therefore be underestimated as a task.
    • We will then provide focus on which roles are important and how they should be engaged with if a structured approach to Benefit Management is to be successful.

How do we identify benefits and use these to define the scope of an initiative?

    • We will show you how a Benefit Dependency Map is an effective visual representation of the causal links between change activities and benefits.
    • From a case study, you will be coached through a Benefit Dependency Map. In doing so you will understand how such tools, and the appropriate use of terms and language, will help embed BRM into your own organisation.
    • The challenges and opportunities of a workshop based approach to collecting benefits information are discussed.

    How is benefits information used?

    ·         The collection of information naturally consumes resources, time and energy; so the information collected and presented must be seen as essential to justify this investment.

    ·         In this session we will provide an overview of the document types flowing from the Benefit Dependency Map (BDM) and their impact of these on the effectiveness of benefit-led decision making.

    ·         Particular reference will be made to:

    o    The six-phase BRM process

    o    A Stakeholder/Benefits matrix

    o    The Jigsaw/Hierarchy of maps of BDM's

    o    Measurement principles

    Where do I start?

By now you will have been given practical insights into the important aspects of benefit information.  In this final session we will help you to consider the current quality of  the benefit information in  your organisation using an extract from sigma’s Benefit Realisation Management Maturity Model.  The result of this review will be reproduced for you which will be particularly useful in planning for, and running, future discussions with others in your organisation.  In addition, we will also help you build a prioritised action plan so you can start to embed the new learning from the workshop.
